Very good article Alain! Unfortunately I would have been victim of the bystander effect myself in this situation, not to mention it was in the middle of night with temperatures close to -20. Not a good combination to convince residents to leave the house to see what's going on..

Very nicely written, witty and funny but also very interesting. Magic Jack does save a lot of money but I can see that with a Mac it's frustrating to say the least. When I have had problems with ours, I go to the forum and get the help I need from them, of course we have a PC, so we do not have to do all that you do each morning, but any way think of what you save. Good luck!

the computer voice is pretty surreal -- also, do you WANT text to completely die out? Now we're probably headed to a future where we listen to T.S Eliot read by Stephen Hawking's voice...

If you’d like a tool for managing your time and projects, you can use this web-application inspired by David Allen’s GTD:

Gtdagenda.com

You can use it to manage and prioritize your goals, projects and tasks, set next actions and contexts, use checklists, schedules and a calendar.
Comes with a mobile version too, and with an Android app.

Missing maps are usually a result of people taking them - not bad design. You'd be surprised how many have them on their walls.

Nice post Alain. Some thoughts:

I don't think there's anything wrong with 'wanting to do it all', as I'm pretty sure everyone has dealt with the challenge of multiple undertakings. Wanting to do it all will never be a problem; what is a problem (and time still has yet to prove me wrong, but what do I know, I'm only 24?) is wanting to do it all at once. So yeah, it's good to want to do it all: how else are we to figure out our strengths and weaknesses? And for the lucky few, they just might be good at everything they try their hand at.

One of the things writers and artists have in common is that to be good, they have to practice, and practice a lot. I think the challenge for both lies in the ability to keep things fun. The audience makes writing fun, but sometimes the work that goes into getting that audience comes at the cost of the liveliness that goes into putting thoughts onto paper for the hell of it. I think what I'm trying to get to here is that until a writer can avoid thinking of that imaginary audience and imaginary critic, and I have yet to be able to do that as a writer, it will remain to be damn hard to just write.
